Jabberwocky Redux: Are we geek enough now?
We're still scratching our heads over what happened this week.
It started simply enough: I was avoiding real work — this time on the latest Li'l Johnny's Adventure game, and I happened to write a few lines of Actionscript code based upon Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem, "The Jabberwocky." Turns out, a couple of my coworkers liked the piece, so I put it up on Turdhead for the world to ignore.
But this time, thanks to a brief article on Slashdot, something happened: The hitherto-unknown Turdhead.com apparently and inadvertently had lobbed a grenade into an existing turf battle between the fledgling Actionscript programming community and the more established "traditional" programming legions (who apparently take the title of "geek" pretty seriously!). The Actionscript crowd seemed to love it, and many other people — programmers and pedestrians alike — also had good things to say. The "Actionscript Jabberwocky" caused a few smiles, and that was its intended purpose.
But… we were amazed to see that some of the Java/C/Assembly/Logo programmers that stopped by actually seemed to LOATHE the idea that someone would dare to write in something as… well… unfamiliar, I guess… as Macromedia's ever-evolving Actionscript language.
Truth is, we never intended "The Actionscript Jabberwocky" to be a battle cry. We just happen to be writing more Actionscript than Perl these days, and we think it's a great little language for what it does. Perl and C already HAVE their literary programming traditions (The obfuscated programming contests, and the Perl poetry prizes), and we never claimed to be geeks, anyway: We're turdheads.
But in an effort to appease these "real" programmers, We decided to go back to our roots — back to ALL of our roots, and to create another bit of Jabberwocky poetry that should bring us all together as one (or perhaps as zero).
And with this, I give you: "The Binary Jabberwocky." May we all go in peace!
And as I mentioned before, we'd love for you to drop us a line! And, of course, you can also get your own copy of the gigantic Binary Jabberwocky poster, print or T-shirt here.
You can also purchase the orginal ActionScript Jabberwocky on a poster, T-shirt, mouse pad or baby, too!
Note: You may also want to check out the original article to see what wrought this madness.

Jabberwocky ReduxJabberwocky Redux: Last week’s ActionScript Jabberwocky got Slashdotted and such… good thing it was just a 150K JPG file instead of something with audio, or else bandwidth costs might have been high. Anyway, VeryVito is apparently very sorry to have…
