Slashdot casts wary eye at Macromedia Flash player… again

Posted in General, Opinion, Tech by VeryVito on 8/30/2005

It seems that every time Slashdot mentions Macromedia or Flash, it’s generally in a less-than-positive light. Tonight, they’ve posted a brief bit about the Flash player license and how it could apparently be construed to forbid loading the player onto laptops (although, for the life of me, I don’t understand how they got this from the license).

While I’ve been pretty vocal about wanting Macromedia to stay on the straight-and-narrow when it comes to the company’s image and how their products are perceived in the IT industry, this time I’m going to have to claim I just don’t get the issue: Maybe the license is ambiguous and should be reworded, but… big deal. (Unless it actually is trying to ban laptop use of the Flash Player, in which case, let’s all head over to OSFlash.org and get working on an Open-Source player immediately!)

Apparently, not many other Slashdot readers are taking it seriously so far either. Check out the original post on Slashdot (and the obligatory Flash-bashing there). Or don’t.

Calling all 3d artists! We need a model…

Posted in Automotive, General by VeryVito on 8/24/2005

Editor’s note: Thanks for the interest. The job is filled, and the work is being done as I type.

One of my Web sites, Classic1800.com, needs a 3D model of a Volvo P1800 for use in games, Flash animations and an eventual application interface we’re planning. Since we (I) suck at 3D modeling, I (we) figured I/we’d check to see if anybody here might be interested.

Basically, we need the 3d source files (3ds, Max, Maya, Blender, zModeler, WHATEVER…) and full reproduction rights that we can use for whatever P1800 projects we might have in the future.

If interested, please leave a comment here, and please provide a link to some of your work and a price and timeframe that you think is reasonable (I’m poor, though, so please be gentle!). Designer credit can always be given, too!

If you need inspiration, thousands of pictures of the car can be found at http://www.volv...800pictures.com.

I look forward to seeing what anybody can do!

Damn. I missed the first anniversary of my 15 minutes of fame!

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been more than a year since Slashdot, USAToday.com and others introduced our site to thousands of innocent bystanders when they ran links to this article that appeared on the front of Turdhead.com August 16 of last year.

Thousands of readers followed those links here last year, and we’d like to thank them all now. Unfortunately, they’re not reading this… But to the five of you who are still visiting regularly, thanks again. Feel free to buy an exhorbitantly priced souvenir as a token of our gratitude.

New game due within… um… a week or two, maybe?

Posted in Games, General by VeryVito on 8/16/2005

At long last, there is a new Turdhead.com Flash game waiting in the wings, and this time it’s actually going to happen. Yeah, I know I’ve said it before, and yeah, I know I was apparently lying through my teeth, but… but… this time is different. Honest. (Why do I feel like saying, “C’mon, baby, you know I didn’t mean it?”)

I’m not going to pretend I know what the actual point of the game is yet (just because I’m creating it doesn’t mean I have to know what it’s going to be), but you would be safe to bet it has something to do with my non-Flash-based hobby, which is tinkering with vintage Volvo 1800s and other such nonsense.

No, wait, really. It will be fun. Honest. (I wouldn’t lie to you again, baby! You know that!)

Bah!

Turdhead.com reports record profits for second quarter of 2005

Posted in About the site, Milestones by VeryVito on 8/11/2005

37-cent goal reachedWe’d like to thank our regular readers (i.e., Blake, Eugene, Lee and Gregg) for helping Turdhead.com reach the goal that so many other Web enterprises have failed to meet: In our first 13 months of operation, we’ve actually made a profit.

I’ve worked with many “This could make it big” Web sites over the years, so those who know me will understand why I’m excited about a Web site that actually pays its own bills (small as those bills might be). After years of pouring cash and nerves into creating online medical databases, technical recruitment sites, daily newspaper engines and community portals, I seem to have finally found a comfortable place of my own here on the once-wild Web.

Thanks to Google’s AdSense program and steady sales of Sticky Turds, ActionScript Jabberwocky T-shirts and Li’l Johnny merchandise, we’ve actually managed to recoup our costs this year.

Granted, the grand total of profits comes to about 37 cents so far, but for somebody who’s been placing all their eggs in online enterprise baskets since the birth of Netscape 0.9 Beta, this comes as a bit of a shock. Since 1995, I’ve spent more money than I’d like to count — riding the dot-com bubble with both hands tied to the wheel. And until now, I didn’t even get a lousy T-shirt for it.

Which is what makes Turdhead.com’s sweet, sweet 37-cent profit (and its modest success in the media this year) all the more wonderful. In this post dot-com world, this site was never supposed to make money. In fact, I figured I’d just pour a little of the money I got from my day job (It’s kinda nice working for The Man now) into the site until I got bored. This one (OK, this one and its automotive sister site, Classic1800.com) is only here for the fun of it.

And a few months later, it’s still fun. Not a big revenue earner, but in no way a drain, either.

Thanks again to everyone!

By the way, if you’re looking for a way to add T-shirts, posters or other merchandise to your own site — or want a quick-and-dirty way to make your own custom stuff, I whole-heartedly recommend CafePress for the job. I’ve had good luck with them, and the quality and ease-of-use is great. You won’t get rich, but you you won’t go broke, either!
