New Flash game
(Cosmic Bounce released just under deadline)

Filed under: by VeryVito at 6:39 pm — [Tag on del.icio.us]

It's hard to describe the latest game from Turdhead.com, but it's certainly a departure from our past: There are no drowning third-graders, no taunting coworkers and (gasp) no graphic displays of violence against hard-working cartoon characters. Regardless, we hope you enjoy Cosmic Bounce.

Almost more screensaver than video game, Cosmic Bounce is to Web-based games what salami is to manhole covers: Zen.

The heat is on! (aka, “IOU 1 new Flash game”)

Filed under: by VeryVito at 1:38 am — [Tag on del.icio.us]

It's the 31st of January — exactly one month since my cocky statement just before the New Year in which I promised to deliver at least one new Flash-based game per month throughout 2006.

So how's it going so far?

Well, except for the big blank spot under this

post, the schedule's going fairly well. I'm not defeated yet! I still have 22.5 hours (less time alloted to sleep, work, previous poker tournament commitments and Tivo viewings) to crank out this month's game.

Honest, it's coming.

Really. I mean it. Check back before midnight; it should be interesting to see what I can come up with before then!

Flash for cats??! This just might catch on…

Filed under: by VeryVito at 1:47 pm — [Tag on del.icio.us]

Our friends at Hyperology just may be on to something: Flash-based "interactive toys" aimed directly at cats — and the people who feed them. Could a Meow Mix sponsorship be far behind?

Naphthalene claims he made the first such application for his cat… but I'm guessing he really made it for the bigwigs over at Ralston Purina. Or not.

Either way, cool idea! If anybody tries it out on a 30-inch flat screen, let us know how it goes.

for (months in year[2006]) {numberOfGames++}

Filed under: by VeryVito at 12:33 am — [Tag on del.icio.us]

I tend to get myself in trouble every time I pre-announce a new project, but here goes: Beginning in 2006, we here at Turdhead.com have resolved to produce and release at least one new Flash game per month. In other words, we plan to increase our current stable of games by more than 600 percent by January 2007.

Why?

Mainly it's the allure of fame and fortune that all Flash programmers receive automatically upon the

release of a new work. That, and the incredible popularity we gain among women, children and domestic animals with each new release. Not to mention the amazing… um… delusions of grandeur we experience when we triumphantly announce, "Oh, wait, hang on… try this version…"

Need an unforgettable soundtrack? Try RealMusician!

Filed under: by VeryVito at 2:57 pm — [Tag on del.icio.us]

As filmmakers learned decades ago, the right musical score can turn an otherwise mundane scene into an unforgettable piece of filmmaking. It's true with Flash presentations and games, too, but unfortunately, producing original music is still a daunting task for many.

Sure, there are plenty of "cut-and-paste" audio collections out there, and I'm often amazed at what people can do with them. But there's nothing more disconcerting than hearing the melody you just included in your client's online jewelry promotion also being used to sell hemorrhoid medication on TV!

Unfortunately, soundtrack music today is distributed the same way clip-art has been since the 90s — it's easy and cost-effective, but when used wrong or often, it defeats the purpose. A developer often loses the "hook" he'd been trying to set in the first place: Rather

than creating something as memorable as the three-tone audio signature of NBC ('ennn-BEEE-seee'), he ends up with "Generic Bassoon and Harp #32," a tune he now shares with local radio commercials, a Flash banner ad for tennis shoes and the seat-belt buzzer on his wife's 2004 Hyundai sedan.

Recently, I decided to forego the canned music often associated with Flash development and sought the help of an honest-to-goodness studio musician and producer with talents far beyond my own (Thus, RealMusician). The results are promising so far, and I can hardly wait to show off the finished version of the next Turdhead.com game, tentatively named Cosmic Bounce and scheduled for release next week.

Shameless begging, panhandling and soul-sucking indignity

Want to show your appreciation for Turdhead.com, its products or services? Although it's certainly not necessary, we'd be pleased as punch if you felt like donating any amount you'd like, or even if you just wanted to give us a nod on Digg.com. Honestly, we have no pride whatsoever (the name of the site is Turdhead.com, after all), and we'll take any recognition we can get for our efforts here.
